Freedom of Expression for Those Who Wish to Destroy Freedoms for Others Lord David Pannick QC

In a July 2015 speech, the British Prime Minister David Cameron suggested that there was a clear trend for individuals to move from non-violent to violent extremism. He argued that it was consequently important for Governments to confront non-violent extremism and foster a greater sense of national identity. In this connection, the UK Government is proposing to introduce legislation to impose restrictions on the espousal of extremist views. In his Hochelaga Lecture, Lord Pannick will examine how democratic societies should respond to non-violent extremism. He will explore the difficulties that arise in balancing the right to freedom of expression against the imperatives of national security.

Lord David Pannick QC was called to the English Bar in 1979 and took silk in 1992. In 2008, he became a Life Peer, sitting on the crossbenches. He specialises in public law and human rights cases and has appeared in numerous high profile cases in the UK, Hong Kong and elsewhere in the world. He is a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford and an Honorary Fellow of Hertford College, Oxford.
